Getting a Varanasi shoot right — the practical side

Banaras rewards early starts and punishes late ones. Between October and March the ghats are workable from about 5:30 to 8:30 in the morning; after that the crowds, the boats and the harsh light take the frame away from you. A Ganga boat shoot needs to be booked the evening before, and a small boat holds two people and two crew comfortably — no more. For an evening session, Chet Singh Ghat and the stretch below Assi stay calmer than Dashashwamedh once the aarti begins.

Away from the river, Sarnath gives you clean stupa geometry and open lawns, Ramnagar Fort across the Ganga has sandstone and courtyards, and Chunar Fort — about an hour out — is worth the drive if you want ramparts and a wide view of the river bend. The BHU campus avenues work well for a relaxed, unhurried morning.

Varanasi wedding logistics we plan around

Most Varanasi wedding venues sit in the Cantt, Sigra and Bhelupur belt, with the bigger lawns and farmhouses out towards the ring road and Ramnagar. The gali traffic in the old city is the real constraint — gear has to be carried the last stretch on foot, so we scout the walk-in before the day rather than discovering it during the baraat. We travel from Prayagraj, roughly three hours by road, and stay the night before any morning ceremony instead of driving in at dawn.
