Vivek & Parul — Pre-Wedding Shoot at Sattal, Nainital
Pre-Wedding Story · October 2024 · Nainital, Uttarakhand
Vivek and Parul wanted mountains, water and cold air, so we took their pre-wedding shoot out of Prayagraj and up to Sattal — a cluster of seven small lakes about 23 km below Nainital. Over two days we photographed them at Sattal Lake, Garud Tal, the KMVN log huts, and a forest waterfall up in the hills.
Three outfit changes, one bonfire, a lot of walking. This is the full set.
Sattal Lake
The lake stays quiet most of the morning. The pedal boats on the far bank and the ridge behind them are what people recognise Sattal by, so we shot the widest frames first, before the day-trippers arrived.
The lake at dusk
By late evening the water goes almost black and the hills lose their detail. We lit this set with a single off-camera flash and let the background fall away.
Still water
A smaller, quieter stretch further along — no boats, no railing, just enough stillness to hold a clean reflection.
The waterfall and the forest
A short walk in from the road: wet rock, moss and a stream running through it. Hard-won advice from that morning — carry a second pair of shoes.
KMVN Log Huts and the bonfire
The wooden huts at KMVN Sattal became the second half of the shoot. Evening indoors, then a bonfire outside once the cold set in.
Autumn woods
Late October in the oaks above the lake. The colour only holds for a few weeks.
Above Nainital
One last set looking out over the valley before the drive back.
Planning a pre-wedding shoot in Nainital or Sattal
A few things worth knowing before you fix the dates:
- Best months: October to December. Clearest skies, autumn colour in the oaks, and the lakes stay still enough to mirror the hills. The monsoon (July to September) is beautifully green but slippery underfoot.
- Light windows: the ridges close in early here. Roughly 6:30–9:30 am and 4:00–5:30 pm are the usable windows; midday at the lake is flat and harsh.
- Where to stay: the KMVN log huts at Sattal put you inside the location — every cabin and bonfire frame in this set was shot on the property. Book well ahead in season.
- Getting there: Kathgodam is the nearest railhead, roughly an hour by road from Sattal. Most couples from Prayagraj travel overnight.
- Give it two days: the lake, the waterfall trail and the quieter water are spread out. One day buys you one look, not three.
- Carry: a spare pair of shoes for the wet rock, and something warm — the temperature drops fast once the sun is behind the ridge.
